Greylock and Advocate Offer Free Help To Area Nonprofit Organizations
May 20, 2008 – PITTSFIELD – Greylock Marketing Group, a subsidiary of Greylock Federal Credit Union, and The Advocate are co-sponsoring a free panel discussion for area nonprofit organizations titled: “Nonprofit Promotion 101- How to Get Noticed by the Media.” The event will be held from 6- 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 at Berkshire Community College in the Koussevitzky Arts Center - room K111.

Rebecca Dravis, editor of The Advocate, said, “The Berkshires are filled with community organizations with noble goals. But because these groups might not have a lot of money to buy advertisements or hire a public relations person, they often don't know how to go about getting the word out regarding their goals.” Dravis added, "This panel discussion will help these groups and organizations understand how best to communicate with the media. In general, we're not a scary bunch, but we do like things a certain way. And having these groups understand those ways will go a long way toward helping us help them, however we can."

Bob Maxwell, assistant vice president and creative art director of Greylock Marketing Group, said, “I’ve been fortunate over the years, to work with a variety of nonprofit organizations. One common thread I’ve noticed is a need for good marketing. They need to let people know about their programs, special events, fund raising and for all around public awareness. So when Rebecca approached us to co-sponsor the event with the Advocate, we were happy to get on board.”

The panel is made up of area media people including:

    - Bob Maxwell from Greylock Marketing Group will talk about why it is vital for any individual arts, community group, nonprofit organization and business to have a marketing plan that includes using the media for free publicity as much as possible.

    - Megan Whilden from the Pittsfield Office of Cultural Development will talk about the artists and groups and businesses that should be encouraged to use the media to get the word out on their events, activities, etc.

    - Sally Morse Majewski, the Clark Art Institute manager of public relations and marketing and a former PR person for the Pittsfield Center (now Downtown Inc.) and Hancock Shaker Village, will talk about what goes into the creation of a press release and what other steps she takes to get the word out.

    - Representatives from The Advocate (Rebecca Dravis, editor), The Berkshire Eagle (Kevin Moran, managing editor), The Hill Country Observer (Fred Daley, editor) and WUPE Radio (Sherman Baldwin, morning show host) will talk about where and when to send press releases to maximize exposure.

    - The panel discussion will be moderated by Joanne Billow from Greylock Marketing Group, formerly with WUPE Radio,

The floor will be opened up for specific questions from the audience to panel members. Reservations are suggested by calling 413-663-7942, Ext. 271. A $5.00 donation will be asked of attendees, with 100% of the money awarded to one of the participating nonprofit organizations in a random drawing. Refreshments will be served.
