Security - 'Paid Training' Ad Scam
WILMINGTON, Dela. (5/21/07)--An advertisement published in a Delaware newspaper that touts "No experience necessary. Paid training" is a scam using fraudulent checks under a credit union's name.
The News Journal published the ad last month and found out it was intended to lure people into the scam, it said (May 16). Anyone who called the phone number in the ad received an employment packet from Phoenix Direct Marketing Group with a fraudulent check for $2,500--overpayment for the two-hour training pay of $250 promised in the ad. The recipient is told to deposit the check and send the remaining amount via wire transfer to a Canadian address. When financial institution tellers call the "888" number on the check to verify it, a person answers the phone and vouches for the check. However, the check bounces, leaving the victim liable. The check purports to be from an account at Kilowatt CU, a $6.5 million asset credit union in Jefferson City, Mo. While the credit union is legitimate and is monitoring the scam, it has no ties to the scheme.
